BAsically what father john martin is saying is a quote you gave us at the beginning of the school semester by George Bernard Shaw "There is only one religion, though there are a hundred versions of it”. Basically every religion is trying to secure its believers a wonderful afterlife and the only way is by believieng in each religions specific god. Do I believe what he says? Well I have'nt reached the top of the peak yet. Or as I see it I have'nt died yet so I don't know if we all end up in the samme place.

In my heart I want to say no though I don't believe him. Mainly because of the way I was raised . I was taught there is only one way to god and the path is long and narrow. That chrisitanity is the way truth and the light. I will always subscribe to these methods But i don believe in John martin vision that all religions shuould coincide peacefully and applaude him for his learning community. I especially want to learn more of Buddhism in the future.

I think jesus and martin luther would be shocked. I think they would be just so surprised at how the world has changed since they left it. I think they would'nt be able to watch tv , read anewspaper or even be able to listen to the radio.Everyone of the pre-emminent forms of christinaity has its own faults and bright spots. For example roman catholicism would have to be discriminated by martin Luther because it is the type of formulaic approach to christianity he was against. I can't be too sure of jesus's response but I doubt it would be positive as the conduct of a select number of catholic priests tarnish the reputation of the church.I think the same view would apply to the eastern orthodox church.

I know martin Luther would love the worship and fire of the protestant church as would jesus however the shortcomings of this specific form of christionaity is in its closed minded approach. I think very few protestants still subscribe to forgiveness and loving everyone , thought thats just my opinion.

Chrisitinaity overall is not ean easy belief system as it purports to be as it is about purity and honesty , and it todays day and age of sex and violence it is very hard to live the life of chrisitanity Jesus and Martin Luther envisioned.

Intreview with a religous leader

As I said in my interview being in a new place where I had never been before was uncomfortable and strange but I still managed to get the interview done. I stood in the back for a while until finally approached by an elder who asked If I needed help of course my response was yea and told him I was doing a report for college and needed to interviews an elder.So I was led to an elder and he asked me my purpose for the visit was to discover diwali and its roots. He was more than happy to show me and also was able to show me the worship process as it was the day of diwali itself. Before the service formally started he taught the background of diwali and all of its story. He went into detail about the way Rama was sent away from his kingdom ayodyha and his subsequesnt return . His path back being lighted by candles placed there by people from his kingdom.therein grew the tradition of diwali or festival of lights.

Then after detailing the background he assumed I was hindu, perhaps due to me being Inidan and my willingness to learn what he was saying.First he siad every prayer in the hindu religion starts with a prayer to hanuman because he is the god of good brginnings. So of course we chanted his name and alll the qualities he embodied. We also paryed to goddess lakshmi as she is the god of properity and wealth.to honor her we laid down flowers and threw rice all materials we needed were in a plate for each individual.These specific gods were prayed to because diwali also signifies a new year spiritually and the 2 gods we pray to embody things people want at the start of the year. We then tied a brotherhood string aound eachother left arms to signal unity.And to finish up we put dots on eachothers foreheads though I am not quite sure what it signifies. I then thanked the man and left.

This year being no different numerous people were nominated for doing inspiring things including Angelina jolie and Don cheadle.Angelina who gives about one third of hear yearly earnings to charities(commands 15-20million a movie)and Don Cheadle focuses on helping Darfur.Liviu Librescu however beat everyone else, A virgina tech professor present the day of the shooting, saw the gunman coming to the class and barricaded the door with his body preventing him from coming in. He saved the lives of thirty student who escaped throught the classroom windows. What makes this feat even more impressive is the fact he was a holocaust survivor who was interned at a Romanian prison camp. Another notable from earlier in the year is Wesley Autrey the newyork man who saved the life of a man who had fallen onto the tracks after having a seizure.

Judaism

Key Points Of Judaism

The basis of all beliefs in Judaism arise from the written and oral Torah. There beliefs are supposedly based off of 13 principles. Over the years various interpretations of the torah has been developed , but the most widely accepted was written by jewish scholar Moses ben Maimon. He has 13 basic principles.

1. G-d exists
2. G-d is one and unique
3. G-d is incorporeal
4. G-d is eternal
5. Prayer is to be directed to G-d alone and to no other
6. The words of the prophets are true
7. Moses' prophecies are true, and Moses was the greatest of the prophets
8. The Written Torah (first 5 books of the Bible) and Oral Torah (teachings now contained in the Talmud and other writings) were given to Moses
9. There will be no other Torah
10. G-d knows the thoughts and deeds of men
11. G-d will reward the good and punish the wicked
12. The Messiah will come
13. The dead will be resurrected

I got this off a website Judaism 101. Apparently the author can not type the word God.Orthodox Judaism believes in the strict practice of these principles and had two forms Haredi and Modern orthodox judaism. Haredis are ultra conservative and believe mainly in prayer and study and refuse modernity. Modern Orthodox Jews adhere to all the above beliefs but are more liberal and accept living in secular and/or non jewish enviroments.

Conservative jews follow all traditonal rules and customs and have a positive attitude towards modern culture.The main difference from orthodox judaism is that it believes that the torah is divinely written by prophets inspired by God but not directly given to moses from God.Rabbis hold the power of interpretation to reflect modern trends and sensibilities. So it rejects the 7th principle.

Reform is considered liberal or progressive and is based on the principles that german jewish leaders formed in 1843.

1.Continuations in development of Judaism
2.Talmud has no authority on the modern Jew.
3.Seek no Messiah, and know no homeland but land of birth.

Compared to protestant churches and uses vernacular and less hebrew.Rejects the fifth
principle of the 13 principles.

Is anyone else seeing this?

For the past the month now pakistan has been in a situation in peril and under a state of emergency. Pakistan has always been a country of instability and violence , however this new situation could upset world security. The current president Gen. Musharaff was a former commando and fought in both the afghan war against the soviets and against India in 1999. He came to power in coup thought it was apparently bloodless. He has recieved acclaim for being incorruptable. Though recent events seem to stain his reputation. His mistake was suspending the chief justice of Pakistans supreme court. As soon as this happened thousands of lawyers protested this and marched in protest. He was then later reinstated and immediately started an investigation into Musharrafs Oct 6 re-election and was about to say it was unconstitutional. Facing this challenge he declared a state of emergency, blacked independent tv stations, fired uncooperative judges , and sent security force to keep protests at a manageable level. A key figure, maybe even rival, is Benazir Bhutto. The only women to lead a muslim country in modern times. She was exiled to Dubai for Supposedly being corrupt, it is said she and her husband set up exclusive deals for the pakistani governtment and all these deals gave commissions to them. The validity of the claims are in question but have been levied against her none the less. She presently was negotiating a deal with musharaff, US approved, that would see them share power. It would help make the country more democratic. However deal fell through due to recent developments that I detailed above.

This related to religion and America more closely than you think. Truth be told I have no idea what exactly is going on in pakistan , and probably very few people do. In country where the taliban is said to run free and have no problems with the government, the confusion only strengthens their grip and gives the more oppurtunity to slip their people into the government. It is a fact pakistan has 80 nuclear devices. So we must be wary and remember as long as hate exists for the way we live and practice freedom, everything realted to any muslim country matter to us.

Diwali

Diwali is a festival of light and colors. I have spent various time in India and have observed its obervance and practice in two different states in India , both kerela and Tamil Nadu. There are little to no difference between the two except for the dialect spoken. Divali itself is a celebration of good defeating evil, light over darkness. There are different back stories associated with the holiday. One story is that it is the homecoming of rama after defeating demon king Ravana. Lanterns and candles were lit to welcome him back. Some also believe it is the day Krishna defeated Narakasura. It is also seen as the day Bali is allowed to visit earth once an year. In kerela the state where my parents were born it is also known as onam and it is celebrated by every religion and is a cultural observance rather a religous one. The spiritual celebration of diwali is the celebration of ones soul or atman.

I went to the temple on yonkers ave and it was lit up from the outside decorated with christmas light, a modern day interpretation of light lamps to welcome back rama. I went inside and of course everyone inside was decked out in their best as its new years to them and I was just wearing a white polo so immediately I felt out of place. Of course everyone there was Indian so I didnt feel too akward.Me and my partner stood out back hoping something would happen soon and people kept giving us funny looks. eventually however a man came up to us and asked what we were doing and we said we were doing a project for our religion class. He led us to an elder and the elder once again went over the story of diwali just in more detail. I was zoning out as I knew the story I took this time to look around and noticed there was an altar type situation out front similar a church, and as is common in most eastern religions there was the smell of incense. The worship or pujaas it called actually started and I too observed there worship. In front of me was a plate with rice, colored paint powder and a samll ball that had the consitency of a rock. Basically all the puja broked down too was repeating what the leader said and doing whatever actions hed did. Similar to game of simon says. Thoughout the puja we did various things on the objects on our plates like pouring water on the rice grains, putting rice on flowers, and placing dots on peoples head who sat next to me. Th end the puja we passed a plate with fire on it and did a circular motion . Reminds me of churh just different gods.

Current event 8

Deepavai or deevali aka the festival of light is celebrated by hindus on november 9th. It is a festival of colors and light and is usually very lively. Recently on March 14 The Hindu american Foundation was able to get the house to pass resolution 245 of that recognizes deevali as a historical holiday and national Indian holiday. I am actually doing my project on Hinduism and will hope to see some of these festivities. More information on the subject can be found at

The article details the legal action of an Irish hospital to force two womens whose blood hemoragged after a difficult pregnancy . The two women refused to recieve the blood as it is against the Jehovah witness faith. This is once again a case where peoples take their faith over their health and well being to ensure their place in a second Life. I both agree and disagree with the women on their choice but will not judge their decision. The case is expected to go on until christmas and it is hapenning curently in Ireland. From what I understand the jehovah witness organization prohibits blood transfusion but it is not specifically mentioned in their scripture.

Since its halloween I feel like it is necessary to talk about the roots of halloween before it has evolved into what it is today. Today it is a celebration of the supernatural and kids dress up to trick or treat , but it was not always like that. In the beginning it was a gaelic festival which commerated the dat oct31 which they believed the spirit world and living worlds overlapped. Costumes were worn to mimic spirits or placate them. When the romans occupied the area they incorporated this into several traditions too. The name halloween caomes from all hallows day also known as all saints day. It was used by the catholic christian faith to commemerate all saints who have passed from this world. The communties who participate in halowwen extensively are the gaelic comminties Ireland and Scotland, they are followed by America And the U.K. In fact in England over the past 5 years spending for halloween has increased from 12 million to almost 120 million. This is also and adult holiday as many pubs and bars hold festivities. In Mexico ir is celebrated as a two day celebration say of the dead or dia de los muertos. Various froms of haloween are practiced all over the world just not on october 31. Some of these festivals are traditional and have been celebrated for many years, Chinese people have a ghost day.

Hope everyone is safe this halloween. Its even safer this year as in some towns are restricting the movement of sex offenders.

I tried to upload picture from the internet Using the image uploader but that did'nt work for whatever reason. So I am just going to descrribe what my shrined would be . First off a shrine can also be any object that is used to recongize or commerate any person or event not just religous. For example in my town there is a road where two high school student died in car accident two years ago , since that time there has always been picture of them flowers and and candles . In my kamidana I would have things that are central to my life : my family , and jesus. The center of it would be my family because theya re most important to me.My parents would be front and center as they have raised me rom the ground up and I owe to them to take care of them at a certain stages in their lives. To the right of them would be my brother who after my parents die are the only direct living link I have on this earth. To the left of my parents would be a few cousins I hold in trust and can depend on. Underneath my parents I would have a picture of Jesus. I have been raised a certain way in life and contrary to any feeling anf doubts I have I believe in Jesus . I have put faith in him my whole life and that wil not change. To the right of my family would be cross symblozing the sacrfice of jesus and his human connection to us. In my family life styl the place we congregate most is the kitchen. So I would out it in the kitchen. Some people might see this as disrespectful , But I ask whats the point of a shrine If people dont see it? I dont worship man made objects so I wouldnt worship the kamidana but rather I would use it to remind my self of the things closest to me and make prayers for those people and to jesus.

the above link goes to a story in which an 18 year old boy tried to set fire to a convent that had 6 nuns sleeping in it. Luckily the nun smelt the smoke and where able to escape without bodily harm.I just put this article in because I was recently thinking of how many jewish synagogues have been vandalized over the last couple of years.At least once every 2 months there is a story on the news of there being a swastika painted on door, stoop, or something. This is not exclusive to the synagogues however, but to all religious institutions. For example after september 11 all the sikh temples were vandalized. All this just shows the double faceted nature of religion. As much peace as all religions strive to attain it seems to sprout up as much hate as well. Or maybe the media just likes reporting what people like to hear...it's one of the two.

Confuscious and Lao-Tzu

the following is a discussion between two great minds on life itself:

Lao-Tzu : Confuscious what does thou think of the essence of humans?

Confucius: Man Should be outwardly loving and caring and should show genuine appreciation and respect for eachother.

Lao Tzu : I agree completely all men are their greatest assets , life is the greatest wonder so we must respect eachother.However In that same vein life of others are not as important as ones own. Since life is the greatest asset we must seek to extend and enrich our own lives instead of others.

Confucius : agreed but there must be respect by any means necessary is not a principle I live by.Respect is necessary all things have order.we must respect those superior to us.

Lao -Tzu : Agreed , However we must live simple lives and over complication is not needed. The essence of life is in simplicity and a small village is the best way to live.

Confucius : True simplicity is the key to happiness. You are truly a wise man.

Tao and Wu Wei

Tao and Wu wei go hand in hand as principles of living life as it comes and not reacting to anything.It is just letting anything happen to you and not letting it bother you. This night have been practical at one point and time , but it is a very hard principle to live by especially in todays world.We need to worry about life and whether food is going to come to us, who is going to pay the bills , how are we going to get places. I know accepting this as way of life would be very difficult and I could not live this way.It would change my life because I could not be responsible or accept anything bad that happens . For example if someone robbed me and beat me up I would be unable to defend myself or If someone was about to run me over I would have to get run over rather than moving and on top of that I wouldnt be able to go to the hospital because It is unnatural. No way I could live this way , maybe accept thid principle of wu Wei and tao but I can not.

Buddhism

The community I am addressing in this post is the people I work with. I work in a simple grocery store and have been working on the night crew part time.Most of the men I work with are older men about 45 to an average around 55 years of age. Many people consider this age to be years where people are winding down their lives and have lived to see alot and usually these men are dissastisfied with the way this country has changed from the way they knew it when they were younger in their twenties ib about 60s-70s. they are very displeased with the way the community has changed not in the way people dress or do things, but rather their soical values. People tend to be more dishonest , distrustful and petty. In my coworkers time period they did all things we young ones do today but they had lines they wouldnt cross. They always worked as hard as they partied or enjoyed life. This principle is not as evident today in youth, its more like live as fast and as short as possible. A discourse I would give to these men is one I feel the rationalist sect of buddhist would use. Teach your children and those around you to do better and live life right and America will buck this trend of complacency and laziness.

Hinduism

1.Hindus Believe in reincarnation of humans in another body after death. This cycle of life continues to occur and the person will move up in the caste system as long as his/her duties were performed correctly. Finally resulting in one day the person reincarnating as a god. This is staed in the law of Manu.

2.According to Hindu literature, the Upanishads , there is an assumption that only on realty exists that is Brahmin. All of life is an expression of Brahmin.

3.The nature of a person is defined by his/her karma. A good person is a reflection of good actions in the past and bad nature is a reflection of bad actions in the past.

Jainism

1.Jains also believe in reincarnation. In Jainism however karma of any sort binds the person to earth. According to Mahavira karma is built up due to any activity. So to stop the cycle of reincarnation the best way is to do as little as possible.

2. There is no Central God but a central leader named Nataputta Vardhammana is present. Jains tend to believe in the Dual nature of the world and life itself. The world is divided in to two: soul(jiva) and Matter (ajiva). Matter is useless , soul is eternal.In Jain teachings as long as the soul is bound to flesh it is stuck in an endless cycle of life. The ideal life which offsets incarnation is an ascetic life with consideration to non injury of animals.

3. The ideal nature of a Jain is in an ascetic life style free of all worldy materials and riches. In addition to this They cannot knowingly harm animals. This is seen in the way some monks sweep the area they tread to prevent harm to insects and strain water to prevent harm to animals in water, some monks are even known to care for rats. Other oaths Jains take to become a monk are to speak the truth ,and refrain from taking anything that is not given. So basically the inherit character of man is good.

Sikhism

1. Sikhs practice many characteristics of Hinduism including reincarnation and Karma.

2. There is only one true god , though hindus may see god in different ways and forms.The supreme creation of god are humans and as such they have free reign to do whatever they please including eating animals. One of the few Indian religions that legitimately allow eating meat.

3. The nature of person in the beginning of the formation of this religion was to be peaceful as nanak the founder was a pacifist. However in later years they became know to be fierce warriors mainly because they strove to protect their religion in country where Jains are a minority.

Buddhism

1.Practice the teachings of Buddha. Buddha did recognize hinduism but rejected many of its teachings such as the vedas , animal sacrifice, and also considered the gods human. He did believe in reincarnation and karma however like most indian religions.

2. No central god as said before Buddha believed all the gods were actually men and that they were also subject to karma and reincarnation.He also considered there to be no soul but rather 5 physical mental and physical aggregates which are bound to a cycle of life and death.

3. An eightfold path must be followed to break the bonds of life. All of the steps in the path are designed to make the person humble and overall is similar to jainism in its vows of simplicity and being honest.

Among the news of presedential race, Jlo having twins, the blackstone scandal, and the wisconsin shooting. A little know documentary was relesaed on friday called "For the bible tells me so". It documents the relationship between hetersosexual coneservative christian parents and the homosexual sons and daughters. In the review I read some prominent figure are mention, but more imortantly after the parents discovered their kids were gay the parents tended to backtrack on their philsophy. After redaing this I just wonder isn't that just like life we tend scorn other for their purported mistakes or shortcomings until it happens to us.

Mohandas was a forward thinker who had roots in the past. He was a rare human because he is one of the few people to have walked the earth who amplified all of human kinds good traits. His legacy is great and is known to inspire greatness. One great person who used him as an inspiration is Martin Luther King.

The way he practiced Hinduism in the most applicable sense was that he lived life by every law and lived right. But he did not live every principle of the Hindu religion . For example he followed jain principle in the way he avoided all types of meat and also he sought to destroy the principle of the caste system. He hated with all his heart the principle of being untouchable. He also was more accepting of other religions than most Hindu scholars as he was well read in all major religious books. I do not think he cared whether he was labeled as a good Hindu or not. What he sought in life was that all people were equal and that everyone could get along with each other. He hated the idea of India being separated as it is now based on the principle of religion. He would have considered his lifes mission a failure because there is a Pakistan.

He is a role model for the ages and person with patience beyond measure.”I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent.”

Senator john McCaine recently had an interview with beliefnet.com For those not aware who the Senator is , he is an honorable man who was POW for 10 years in Vietnam. He is also an unabashed episcopolian christian who is currently a baptist. IN the interview he made comment some might see as deragatory:

Has the candidates’ personal faith become too big an issue in the presidential race?
Questions about that are very legitimate.... And it's also appropriate for me at certain points in the conversation to say, look, that's sort of a private matter between me and my Creator.... But I think the number one issue people should make [in the] selection of the President of the United States is, 'Will this person carry on in the Judeo Christian principled tradition that has made this nation the greatest experiment in the history of mankind?'"

Which he later corrected as meaning that this nation was built on the principle of humanity in christianity which it was so its not a big deal to me.

But his next comment:"... personally, I prefer someone who I know who has a solid grounding in my faith. But that doesn't mean that I'm sure that someone who is Muslim would not make a good president. I don't say that we would rule out under any circumstances someone of a different faith. I just would--I just feel that that's an important part of our qualifications to lead.*"

Why does religion matter in any way shape or form to the presidential position? It is a job like any other and like any other religion has no bearing in ability. I admire the senator as he is a national hero who was a pow for 10 years, but comments like this make him look rather foolish. By saying he prefers a christian as president not only is he insulting the islamic culture by saying they can't run this country he is also inferring they are a religion on hate and insensitvity. Of course this all reading between the lines, but I assure there are various muslims reading between the lines. Hopefully comments like these are few in the upcoming presidential race.

for my second post I am putting up the link for a news story that is in current headlines. The link is http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/law/09/24/polygamist.trial/index.html. In the story a polygamist prophet was found guilty of aiding rape. Just reflecting on this it is hard to imagine such practices exist in America still. Just cause we turn a blind eye to certain things doesn't mean that it doesn't go on. The article says marriage were also arranged for girls as young as thirteen. I wont judge, Sometimes though, it is hard to believe the things people do for their respective faith.

Well for the most part it seems to me hinduism as a religion that is almost entirely based on interpretation and choice. There are various gods to pick from and ones guidelines and boundaries are based on ones choices and preferences. Someone could culminate their personal beliefs and forma cult as long as they have a following in the hindu religon. The method of worship also is dependant on the person as there are 4 methods of whorship from spiritual mediatation to doing good deeds. As for me the path that I favor the most is doing good deeds and living life to a higher standard. One final thought since hinduism is such an open religion could other gods from other religions be incorporated? For example could some aspects of the muslim religion be incorporated to form its own hindu cult.

Indian Religions

Hey all hope everyone is doing fine , my assignment is a reaction to our reading in hopfe as I didn't find anything interesting articles or clips to report on. The topic was religions from India and what Coincidence my parents are Indian and I know something about hinduism but not too much. Overall the reading was pretty mcuha rehash of some of the basics things I knew anout the religion. One of the more interesting things about the religions from India are the impact of jainism and buddhism. My mother once told me once Buddha was an Indian prince and I really didn;t believe her. But it says the same In the reading, I admire Buddha eventhough I am christian ,because he truly set a moral code and sysyem higher than any other.He was an honest man and a great teahcer. His teahcing are not really about worshipping him but bettering one self. Surprsing that religions that once arose from India have bigger impact in other asian countries. Another interesting fact here is that hindu literature has changed over time , much like the bible. Does alll religous literature change and evolve over time ?

hey all,

yea busy first week and all wasn't able to find any interesting articles or events in religion to report about so I will be commenting on famous playwright George Bernard Shaws quote. In the quote he states all religions are the same and there are basically hundreds of versions of it. I semi agree and semi don't. I believe every religion is extremely unique and people all believe that their God or leader is the one person or being that will lead them to heaven or a better life. Every religion has its own customs and practices that are all different. Religion is so numerous people have died for it and struggled to spread it s word. This seen all the way from the crusades to 9/11, all these events were acts that certain people believed spread their religion. So don't believe all religions are the same just with different dressings.

Do believe however the purpose of all religions is one. That is hope and the faith someday when we die that their is something after death. Religion is also a code of conduct that helps control all humankind. When you think about no religion really advocates hate does it? All of them advocated doing good things because it helps in our purpose of getting to heaven after death.Religion is a mental and physical presence which helps everybody live life a little better or more properly. I mean how would one fell if for certain it was discovered their is no God or Afterlife? Imagine knowing anything you do in this life is short lived and after you die that's it. Imagine the lawlessness and state of chaos the world might be in.. I'm out see everyone wednesday.

Surprised to see I'm most like an orthodox quaker(insert bad oatmeal joke here) I don't think conservative but more liberal to moderate. Maybe I answered some of the questions wrong but my main faith liberal protestant is the second choice. Nothing really surprising in my top religions except for Unitarian Universalism. Check out what was , for the most it seems like Christianity but very liberal. They also seem to be very kind and like helping those in need something I like doing. They however promote equality with homosexuals. I have no problem with homosexuals but don't go out of my way to help them out. Every other religion on my list was at 50 percent so no really close matches to my faith outside the Christian realm. Hope everyones enjoying their weekend ...Let's Go Giants!
